Apart from all the TAFE hoohaa the most exciting thing I did this week was drive my boyfriend's car. It's a 1959 Custom 300 Ford imported from America but we just call it the Tank. I've been a learner driver for the past year and half or so and my driving wasn't quite up to scratch so he wouldn't let me touch the thing. But last week I finished my 100 hour learner log book. Once I got my P plates I wouldn't be allowed to touch it for 3 whole years because it's a V8. In good 'Ol Queensland you can learn in a high powered car but driving one is a no no on your provisional licence. Which is ridiculous because in the southern states they have a weight/power ratio. The Tank easily weighs a good two tonnes so I have a feeling that would have worked in my favour. Hmm. 'Where else but Queensland?'
As for actually driving the Tank, it was nothing short of amazing. Driving a left hand drive car on Australian roads was not anywhere as near as hard as I thought. I didn't stall the car once. My take offs were superb, even on hills. Turning wasn't too much of an issue either. It was just the brake that spooked me. They were awful. Then again I'm told brakes in most old cars are awful. To get these old drum brakes to do my willing I had to brake a LOT earlier and then pump my foot furiously get this big tank to stop. Once I got used to it I felt a lot more confident about halting the two great tonnes of steel I was commandeering.
Here is the tank with L plates. Sexy. It also looks a bit worse for wear because falling seasonal flowers have stained it. Heed my words, DO NOT park under a Crepe Myrtle! So the next day I asked, no ... begged for him to let me drive the tank to the Twilight Hot Rod Show. He wasn't even planning on going so I bribed him by offering to pay his entry fee, paying for petrol and feeding him lemon meringue pie. It turns out Matt just can't say no to lemon meringue pie. The way through a man's heart? Most definitely his stomach.
Now I HAD planned on taking a whole bunch of photos and writing a nice big review of the show for you all the enjoy. However the excitement of driving the tank, telling everyone I drove the tank and catching up with everyone kind of eclipsed that. Oops. Sorry guys, I was just enjoying myself far too much. I was digging Twilight's new venue at the Rocklea show grounds as there was plenty of shady places to retreat. It was an awful, hot sticking day and my make up gave up the ghost and melted. So naturally I got excited and did a little dance when my friends and I found the snow cone van. Yum!
So like all car shows I walked around admiring all the car entries, chilled out in the shade to watch the bands, milled around with friends and perused the stalls until we all got the boot at 8pm. It was a Sunday night after all.

A snap my friend Kris took of me driving (looking as pleased as punch) on our way out.
In conclusion it was a great day out. Props to organizer Lori Lee for another great event. I spent the following Australia day on Tuesday at a Barbecue. I ate a streak burger with beetroot and all the trimmings and washed it all down with some lemon, lime and bitters Wimmers soft drink. Dessert was lamginton cake and pavlova with fruit and cream. It was all very Australian.
Whew! That was really long winded. I must learn to write shower blogs more often. Enjoy the coming week folks. I will get back to you all with all my TAFE happenings. I am spending today buying all my stationary, books and haberdashery!
