In a nutshell the story is: Girl finds super pretty bustle back laced ruffle skirt. Girl falls in love with skirt. Skirt in correct size still does not fit. Oh the tragedy. Oh unrequited love. And I was willing to pay $189.00 for it! Well ... if it fit.

I love a fitted skirt but many are just not made for a 7.0 waist to hip ratio like mine. That's the same ration Marilyn Monroe had. The skirt could have done with a few good darts. It fit around the hips but flapped around in the breeze around my waist. FAIL. I could have stashed 5 or more packets of Malteasers in that waist to hip overhang. Mmm ... Malteasers.
Thankfully there is light at the end of the tunnel. I've been doing lots of skirt patterning in class lately. This skirt would be tricky to make but I after a learn how to do fiddly things like binding, lace and sew fabric that is not cotton based I should be set. Hmmm, maybe a way to go but it will happen. One day.
Oh skirt! You shall be mine!
Next time I hope to have a story with a happier ending.

You can always alterate the waist and stuff. You should know that by now.
ReplyDeleteBut it could be more satifying when you make it up yourself.
Either options are win win. I think anyway.
Oh I knew someone was going to say something about alterations! :D
ReplyDeleteYeah that did cross my mind. But heck, I'd hate to pay $189 and butcher it. Unpicking it would be a nightmare in itself I think. Also ... paying money on top of the purchase price for tailoring fees doesn't appeal to me either.
Yes, self made would be satisfying :D
If it's big on the waist, you wouldn't have to unpick anything.. Oh wait, the waist band, but that'd be it.
ReplyDeleteYou have access to sewing machines! Good ones too. :D
Only the waistband. True true. But I still don't have enough faith in myself to alter it myself. Wouldn't I have to take it in a little bit on the side seams or would the insertion of darts be enough to shape it? Or would the waistband only need to be taken in at the seams. HMMM, so much to think about.
ReplyDeleteDid you know that we got BRAND NEW machines? Purdy purdy JUKI ones. Yes! Automatic cut offs that WORK!
I finally got the hang of those overlockers too. Yew!
It would depend on how the waist is falling, but generally it's the side seams.
ReplyDeleteJuki? Really, I'm not really a fan of Juki, maybe because I tried the old ones a few times and failed. But the slightly not so new now Brothers are my favourite. Haha.
Aha. Well. At any rate, I'm sure I'd screw it up.
ReplyDeleteOh no I love those Jukis. So much better than the old flogged out Brothers. As soon as they arrived my sewing skills improved two fold! I was so impressed with myself and the machine.
I am thinking of buying an industrial machine for home.
Try the online shop... www.beyondthetrapdoor.com They have similar sorts of skirts, not as pretty as the one you posted but see what you think.
ReplyDelete:)
Those bustle skirts are very nice however quite different to what I'm after.
